Hogmanay is a Scottish festival that is held on the last day of the year, December 31st. It is a time for celebration and reflection, as people come together to bid farewell to the old year and welcome in the new one. The origins of Hogmanay are unclear, but it is thought to have roots in ancient pagan celebrations of the winter solstice, and many the the traditions may have been brought to Scotland by invading Vikings in the 8th-9th century.

The word "Hogmanay" itself is thought to come from the French word 'hoginane,' meaning 'gala day,' and first came into use as a widely-used term after Mary, Queen of Scots returned to Scotland from France in 1561. In Normandy, presents given at Hogmanay were called 'hoguignetes.' Some think the word might have earlier origins still, such as the Anglo-Saxon 'haleg monath' or 'holy month,' or even the Scandinavian 'hoggo-nott,' meaning 'yule.'

There's a strong belief that you can't greet a new year until the old one has been thoroughly 'cleared away,' so it is common in Scottish households to do a top to bottom household clean on New Year's Eve. Tradition focuses on sweeping out fireplaces specifically, so unwanted burdens on the household don't come into the new year. A lot of people also try to clear as many debts as possible before midnight if they can!

Traditionally, Hogmanay celebrations begin on December 31st and continue until January 2nd, with each day having its own particular customs and traditions. On the first day, people often go "first-footing" – visiting friends and family to bring them good luck for the coming year. In older times this involved carrying symbolic gifts - coal, shortbread, salt, black bun (a type of fruit cake), and a dram of whisky - over the threshold. The first-footer was usually a tall, dark-haired man, as it was believed that this would bring the most luck, likely a throwback to the days of Viking invasions when a blonde stranger showing up on your door was definitely not a sign your luck was good!

The second day of Hogmanay used to be known as "New Year's Day," and was a time for religious observances and family gatherings. In the evening, people would light bonfires and set off fireworks to ward off evil spirits and bring good luck for the coming year.

One of the most famous Hogmanay traditions in the modern day is the "Hogmanay Street Party" in Edinburgh. This event attracts thousands of visitors from around the world, who come to witness the spectacular fireworks display and enjoy live music and entertainment. The party traditionally ends with the singing of "For Auld Lang Syne," a Scottish song by Robert Burns that is sung to bid farewell to the old year and welcome in the new one. The opening words are pretty well known in British culture:

Another popular Hogmanay tradition is the "Up Helly Aa" festival, taking place in the Shetland Islands, where the old Viking influence remains the strongest and so Hogmanay is often still called "Yule" instead. "Up Helly Aa" involves a procession of "guizers" – people dressed in Viking costumes – who march through the streets carrying torches. The procession ends with the burning of a Viking longship, which symbolizes the end of the old year and the beginning of the new one. Pretty metal!

With many places offering an authentic Christmas, it's hard not to feel overwhelmed even when away from home, but there are plenty of places which will provide a magical time, with limited fuss, and Istanbul is one of them... so why not go for Christmas in Turkey this year?

With Turkey being a predominantly Muslim country (over 98% of it's locals identify as such), it's going to be low-key, but that doesn't mean you won't find decorations. You'll find street lights, Christmas trees and shop windows even decorated. While this isn't a holiday they particularly celebrate, with most gearing up for New Year instead, you'll still find a copious amount of holiday spirit to enjoy.

Advantages of Celebrating Christmas in Istanbul

The most notable advantage of travelling to Istanbul for Christmas is that on the 25th of December, you'll find business as usual. Shops, banks, and restaurants will all remain open, with them even operating their standard opening hours. If you're interested in sightseeing, you'll be happy to know that the majority of main attractions also remain open, with less reported queues than other days of the year. 

Turkey generally has a colder and darker December than the UK, with an occasional (rare) smattering of snow - but that makes it perfect Christmas weather for cosying up in big jumpers and enjoying warm drinks with good food!

Although the country doesn't celebrate Christmas, Turkey still has some excellent Christmas markets. Described as 'much more about the spirit of Christmas and not about Christianity', you'll find decorations and seasonal gifts aplenty. Many Istanbul Christmas Markets run periodically over the month of December, so be sure to check when and where they are before you travel if you're keen to attend. 

If food is a massive part of your Christmas Day, Istanbul definitely has you covered. Many restaurants host a buffet-style Christmas dinner with turkey and all the trimmings. Make sure you book in advance for this, because it can be a challenge to find the ingredients to cook a traditional dinner yourself; Turkey and Istanbul have a mostly Muslim population so pork will not be as readily available as other meat varieties, and while you may find bacon at occasional restaurants, they'll be the exception rather than the rule.

For many, Mass or a Christmas Service is what makes the holiday season important to them, and you won't have to miss out on this, even if you're away from home. There are a handful of churches in Istanbul which put on a Christmas Eve Mass and Christmas Day services, including the Roman Catholic church, St. Antoine Church as well as Anglian church Crimean Memorial Church and unorthodox church, Church of St. George in Balat.

Downsides Of Travelling To Turkey In December

Istanbul and much of Turkey treats this time of year as business as usual so you won't get swamped by the usual plethora of Christmas playlists. While some larger stores may opt to add an occasional song to their ambience, they can be few and far between, so if the music is a large part of Christmas for you then you'll probably feel like you're missing out - you definitely won't hear Mariah Carey being belted out everywhere!

Depending on your arrival, you may find that the crowds grow as it gets closer to New Year; this is primarily due to Istanbul being one of the top places to ring in the new year at. If you are planning on staying from Christmas to over New Year, keep in mind restaurants, and bars will begin booking up. While you get a low-key Christmas, New Year will be the complete opposite, so you may want to either gear up for crowds or aim to travel back in the intervening time.

On the flip side of the coin, while it may be good for cosying up once you're there, do remember that Turkey is overall very wet and cold during December, which may put you off the idea altogether if you're adverse to travelling in the rain. Not everyone is keen on the high likelihood of a wet Christmas!
