The Thames isn’t really a great spot for seaside type activities, but if you’re in the UK’s capital there’s no reason to do without - let’s take a look at some of hoo’s favourite seaside towns and beaches near London and in easy reach, for when you absolutely need to feel something between your toes other than your socks.

Bell Wharf Beach is a renowned beach in Southend, and although it might not be Majorca’s best it’s still a great place to relax and soak up the sun. Not only that, but with close parking and easy access just outside of London, Bell Wharf is an ideal beach to visit. With it being near a bay, there are also plenty of activities and cafes you can visit after your fun-filled day.

A very-well hidden beach in London is Northfleet Beach. This beach is a small walk along the coast of the Thames and when the tides are out, you’ll see plenty of fresh, golden sands to relax on. When the tides come in, you might only see mossy pebbles - but don’t worry, this tightly kept secret can be all yours on the right sunny day.

Tankerton Beach is an all-pebble beach showcasing a tranquil setting for those wanting to relax, soak up the sun and even just explore the surrounding area. At a low tide, you can have a quick walk down to the sea and find small bays of sea life or walk away and relax on the grassy banks. Only being an hour outside of London, we think you should venture out there and enjoy the sun.

Joyce Green Beach is a small, but easy-to-access beach on Dartford’s coast. This pebble-lined beach may not resemble those from exotic countries, but still offers calm waters and a great place to chill out, or walk around before soaking up the sun on your favourite towel. Being on the Thames also means you will likely spot some aquatic life too!

Situated bang in the centre of Gravesend, Bawley Bay is an unexpectedly idyllic location for beach access in and around London. Although Bawley Bay may not have lush golden sands, it does have some sand and plenty of pebbles to walk over. With a beachside walk stretching the length of the beach, it’s perfect for those evening or early morning walks.

Thames Point is a small but quite nice beach near London that you can visit if you want to go for a nice stroll. Although you might sink in the swamp-like sands, the walks around this small piece of land are beautiful and with it being right next to the Thames, you’ll be sure to see some aquatic life and some beautiful smells of the ocean.

Rainbow Beach is one of the bigger beaches close to London on this list, based in Stanford-le-Hope, this beach is all sand and although it might be a little wet because of the tide, is still a great place to visit. We can’t guarantee rainbows, but we can guarantee happiness when you visit this beach.

Woah - Egypt means golden sands! Egypt Bay Beach is a golden-sand, clearwater beach in Rochester near London. This beach might not scream exotic, but the golden sands and easy access to the sea make Egypt Bay Beach one of the best beaches in and around London on our list.

Coombe Point Beach is another beach in Rochester that looks very appealing and can be a great way to get out of the city life and into something a little more “ahhhh”. With small sand trails to and from the beach and small calm waves from the Thames, this beach is both appealing and a great place to sit back, relax in the sun, and ‘coombe’ that hair after you’ve had a dip.

If you love the sound, looks, and smells of the beach then you’ll love Blyth Sands. Connecting Blythe to an island (well, almost) - this beach has all you need from silky sands, lush meadow grass and perfect walks to enjoy when you’re taking it all in. We think that if you want a break from city life that Blyth Sands will be perfect for you.

Although it doesn’t sound the best, Thorney Bay Beach is one of the most “beach” type places we’ve got on this list. This beach features everything from golden sands, beautiful walks around the beach and small calm waves to give you that authentic beach feels. It’s not anything like abroad, but when in London - this is a perfect beach for you and your family and friends to relax on. No thorns included.

If you’ve only got a few minutes to explore a beach, Bermondsey Beach is only 10 minutes away from the Tower of London. This beach might not feature any golden sands, but will have you bathing in the sun on smooth pebbles and listening to the relaxing sounds of the Thames. It’s also a hotspot for wildlife, making it even more enjoyable. This is the closest natural beach to the centre of London, so why not check it out or go on a quick walk?

Folly House Beach is another beach very close to the centre of London, on the bed of the Thames near Canary Wharf. An all inclusive holiday has been the answer for travellers who are looking to reduce bookings, pay one set price and enjoy a stress-free time away. Families especially enjoy these kinds of trips, able to enjoy drinks, food and amenities all included in the price. But, with them often costing so much, are all-inclusive holidays all they’re priced up to be?

Why do people choose all inclusive holidays? 

One of the main reasons people opt for all inclusive holidays is the knowledge that everything is included. They won’t have to worry about additional savings for drinks or food because everything is catered for within the price they’ve paid. This includes amenities and coach transfer from the airport. As everything is taken care of, travellers have the stress of their holiday halved, only needing to focus on turning up for their flights and having a great time.

All inclusive holidays suit families with young children or teenagers best because they provide lots of freedom and activities to keep everyone entertained. Most all inclusive hotels or resorts have been designed to keep everyone happy, including tennis courts, waterparks and more.

An all inclusive holiday is also beneficial if you’re travelling in a large group. Restaurants in all inclusive hotels or resorts cater for various dietary requirements in their buffets or restaurants and can usually accommodate everyone sitting together.

Getting away for the first time can be stressful and scary, but all-inclusive holidays provide an easy, stress-free, secure time where everything is taken care of. Because everything is in one package, you have nothing to sort out and this suits first-time travellers perfectly. Are all inclusive holidays always worth it?

While it depends on the holiday you’re after, there are lots to consider before booking an expensive holiday. Here is our list of pros and cons to help you decide.

Most all inclusive hotels or resorts have their entertainment package within the price, which is excellent for those who don’t wish to explore the country they’re visiting. You’ll usually get access to multiple pools, sports facilities and varied entertainment to experience something new daily.

For children, these hotels and resorts tend to offer a lot to keep little ones entertained, from indoor and outdoor activities to fun and games throughout the day they can partake in.

As everything is paid upfront, travel, accommodation, food and drink, you’ll have very little to worry about when it is time to go on holiday. Unless you’re someone who overspends in the gift shop or plans on many excursions, all inclusive holidays are perfect for those on a tight budget once they arrive.

For families, holidays can get expensive, especially when drinks, entertainment and ice cream are usually all additional costs. This is why all inclusive holidays are a perfect choice because the buffets and restaurants cater for even the fussiest of children, saving you additional costs if your child wants to try multiple dishes.

When you have teenagers with you, families can be assured that the wristband they’re wearing will indicate their age. This limits the risk of being served alcohol. In most resort hotels, they tend to have a high amount of security at all entrances and exits, which can be reassuring for all guests.

With all that you’re spending, you’d like to think your money will help support the local economy and the people working in the hotel. Unfortunately, it’s more likely that your money will support the international hotel chain rather than the local community, especially because many all inclusive resorts encourage you to remain within the resort itself rather than spend time (and money) elsewhere.

All inclusive holidays proclaim that everything from accommodations, food and drinks to entertainment is included in the price. But that isn’t always the case. You will often find exceptions, which could be minor things such as upgrading or ordering different meats to certain drinks or cocktails requiring you to pay extra. There is also an additional charge for entry into the hotel’s nightclub, which is often left out of the price.

It’s also worth being aware that there is usually a time frame when all inclusive is in effect and is generally highlighted to you at check-in. Outside these hours, you will be required to pay for anything you need, including drinks, snacks, or food.

However, if you’re someone who wishes to see more of the country or experience their nightlife, this will be an additional cost on top of what you’ve already paid.

All inclusive holidays are often very rigid, usually beginning and ending on the same day each week. To book onto one, you’re usually tied into paying for a more expensive flight because you’ll be tied into the partner airline with whom the hotel has partnered.

Due to the price people pay for an all inclusive holiday, people tend to try and ‘get their money’s worth’, which can be difficult when there is so much on offer. Unfortunately, food will be wasted whether you get an additional plate, and it is best to avoid overfilling so you can enjoy the rest of your stay. It can also become tiring quickly to eat the same meals all the time, with the buffet and restaurant menus not changing frequently enough if you’re there for a while!

If you’re someone who loves to get out and about or likes to see the place you’re visiting, you may find all-inclusive won’t be worth it. All-inclusive holidays offer excursions, but these usually don’t allow you to explore freely. You also won’t get the most for your money if you spend large portions of your time in the city or exploring.

While they’re not always the most stylish, they will get you everything you need, from food and drinks to entertainment. For adults, they can be tedious with sunbathing—even more so if you’re not planning on drinking alcoholic beverages. It can be even more difficult with children to ensure these remain undamaged—or unremoved.

All-inclusive holidays can be considerably costly, and because of this, you’ll need to weigh whether the cost matches what you’re hoping for from your holiday.

There is something to be said about paying one fixed sum of money compared to tallying up flights, accommodations, food and drinks, and travel - the itemised approach can save you money, but is more tedious in terms of book-keeping.

However, if you’re someone who doesn’t drink or won’t be planning on having several alcoholic beverages throughout the day, the cost of all inclusive may not be worth it for you. The same will be true if you’re someone who loves to go out exploring and isn’t planning on remaining on the resort, this may not be the board type you should choose as it restricts and ties you down.

How to work out if all inclusive is for you

When it comes down to it, it all depends purely on what kind of holiday you’re after. For a great all inclusive holiday, you’re looking at around £100 per night, per person at least, to ensure you have enough amenities to keep you entertained. This isn’t a great deal if you’re planning on exploring or partaking in lots of excursions.

There are of course cheaper deals out there, but this lower price usually reflects limited offerings compared to more expensive hotels.

Because of this, unless you’re someone who is planning on over-drinking and over-eating, the cost for an all inclusive holiday can be very pricey especially with overindulging also coming at the risk of enjoying your holiday. You’re also tied down to only staying at the hotel or on the resort to get the most from what you’ve spent, with sightseeing and exploration further afield essentially non-existent… at least without spending even more!

Are All Inclusive Holidays Really Worth It?

Best known for being the UK’s “second city” with a huge metropolitan area, it may seem surprising to go seeking green spaces in the area - but there are plenty of parks in Birmingham to grab a break from the urban scenery, and hoo has picked out the best for you to visit the next time you’re there.

Cannon Hill Park is much more than a park. Known as “Birmingham’s Best Day Out”, it is home to several attractions, such as the golden putter mini-golf course, the fun park for kids, and the land train to get around the park. Not only this, but the park itself is 80 acres of formal parks and another 120 acres of conservation and woodland to enjoy a run, walk or just a nice day out with the family.

If you’re looking for a park with your traditional greenery, trees, lakes and small activity hotspots, then Handsworth Park is perfect for you. This 63-acre plot of land features all of the above and is an amazing place to visit with friends, family, or even just by yourself. With plenty of walks and amazing activities to do, we think a walk, run, or cycle around Handsworth Park is well worth the time.

If you’re an avid watcher of Gardeners World on BBC, then Kings Heath Park might look a little familiar. Kings Heath Park is another garden and park you can visit to not only relax and rest your head with some food but also participate in some great activities. Although you might not be on TV (but you could be), this park is a great place to visit if you’ve got some time to kill, or you want to take a break from city life!

Highbury Park is another publicly available park you can visit if you want to take a break and want to experience some beautiful walks. Regardless of when you visit, Highbury park has some of the best trails and walks around it, and although there are no real activities to do here, we’re confident you’ll simply love walking around, and maybe taking a break on one of the many benches or grass spots where you can sit and relax.

Although 3.11 acres in size, Summerfield Park has plenty to do and has amazing walks and trails for you to walk around. Not only this, but you may find plenty of puppies here, as popular jogging, cycling, and dog walking spots! With a vast portion of the park surrounded by trees, there’s also plenty of area for sitting and relaxing on the grassed areas. Although you’re unlikely to see the Queen in Birmingham, Queens Park is a 10-acre was laid out in celebration of Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee. This large, but vastly open space is full of beautiful trees and flowers as well as perfect walks around small mounds making the whole walk feel lush. We think if you’re in the area you should take a quick walk around and see how you feel - as we’re sure you’ll love it.

Coming in at nearly 50 acres, Manor Farm Park is exactly what it says it is. This varied parkland features stunning walks, and plenty of room for activities, exercise or even just to take in the scenery. With two playgrounds for the kids (or adults - we know you’re tempted), Manor Farm Park is the perfect place to spend a bit of time and enjoy all of nature's glory. 

Moseley Park is much more than a park like some above, but is bursting with wildlife. Featuring several acres of lakes, grassland and walks around this greenery haven, we’re sure you’ll love just spending some time and smelling all nature has to offer. If you want to see the animals, just take a walk around near the lakes and trees - we’re sure you’ll see some beauties.

Sunset Park & Moonlit Park is a Council-Landscape-led park that was opened in 2005 and 2006 as part of a local regeneration project. Sunset Park has plenty of walks but is most known for its outdoor events space. Moonlit Park on the other hand is home to a play area for children and a wildflower meadow which has a beautiful smell and view.

The 450-acre area of countryside, called Woodgate Valley Country Park is one of the biggest and the most packed country parks in the UK. Featuring a wide range of plans, hedgerows, ponds and wildlife. Over 250 plant species have been discovered at Woodgate Valley and if you love birds, you’ll be sure to love one of the 90 species discovered at the park.

If you’ve got kids or fancy a quick walk, then head on down to Cotteridge Park. This vast but easy-to-navigate park is at the heart of the community. Inspiring creativity and imagination, there are plenty of activities such as playgrounds, swings, tennis and basketball courts on top of some of the most elegant trees and greenery. This is one park you won’t want to miss.

This 2400-acre National park is a highlight of Birmingham. With open heathland, woodlands and even several lakes - Sutton Park is one you need to visit. With it being one of the largest urban parks in Europe, it’s also got plenty of wildlife and in some cases, cattle and some ponies roaming free. This can be a great place to take the family if you plan on stopping by.

Senneleys Park is another park that you should visit when in Birmingham. Not only is Senneleys a large space to explore, but it also has several major features such as a BMX track and football pitch, BBQ areas and picnic areas. Not to mention the whole park is lined with beautiful trees and greenery to make the park perfect for you and your family.

Perry Hall Park is a country park based in Birmingham that is not only stunning but also bursting to the brim with wildlife. No matter if you love birds, ducks, squirrels or anything in between, Perry Hall Park will probably have it somewhere. With plenty of tall, established trees, Perry Hall is a park to visit on a sunny day for plenty of shade and lovely scenery.

If you’re looking for a small open space with plenty of trees and flowers, then Bloomsbury Park is an idyllic place for you. Used mostly for recreational use and for history about Birmingham, such as the earliest car, and metal sculptures that were built right here in Birmingham. If you’re looking for a place to chill out and walk a little, then Bloomsbury park is a great choice.

They wouldn’t call it that if it couldn’t deliver… but what are all the Lake District lakes, and what makes each one special and unique to visit? Which is the biggest, smallest, most, or least popular? Get the lowdown on the UK’s most famous set of lakes with hoo’s guide.

Windemere Lake is the most known lake in the Lake District and is one of the largest natural lakes in the Lake District and even England. Although long and thin, Windermere Lake is still a stunning lake to visit, and on land has plenty of tourist attractions, facilities, and amenities to keep you going.

Ullswater is the second largest lake in the Lake District coming in at around 7.5 miles long and is one of the calmest lakes in the Lake District. With 3 noticeable bends, many people refer to UIlswater as “the dog's leg”, as from a map it does look a little like a dog's leg. Only 6 miles away from Penrith, the Ullswater lake is clear and deep and is a great place to visit if you’re in the area.

One of the smaller lakes on this list, Derwentwater is only 3 miles long and is a quick 15-minute walk from Keswick town. Derwentwater is also not very deep at the deepest point, meaning you can dip your toes on most of the entry points and get some brilliant snaps of the lake, and the surrounding hillsides which make it very picturesque.

Owned by the National Park, Bassenthwaite Lake is one of the larger lakes on this list, coming in at about 4 miles long. This breath-taking but incredibly shallow lake is nothing but spectacular, with desktop-background-worthy views! Why not take a picnic (to eat on land obviously, no one likes a soggy sandwich).

Coniston Water is the fifth largest lake out of the 16, at five miles long and is a lake bursting at the seams with aquatic life. It has three small islands that you may be able to visit on a kayak, but with breathtaking views and silky still waters - there’s no reason not to visit Coniston Waters.

Haweswater Lake is another lake in the Lake District that was built as a reservoir in the valley of Mardale. In extreme heat, you’ll often see parts of the lake dry up as it’s not super deep but is quite long, but regardless the trails and walks around this lake are some of the best in the world - with beautiful scenery and picture-perfect waters to adventure with. 

Another pretty long lake, Thirlmere was originally two lakes but since the dam was built for only 104 feet, and the lake reaches 158 feet deep - they became one. Although quite narrow, the surrounding area looks stunning with plenty of greenery and earthy smells to help you through the trails in the area. If you’re in the area, we strongly suggest you take a detour to experience all that Mother Nature has to offer.

Looking a little like Emmerdale’s Intro scenes, Ennerdale Water is a shallow and usually the warmest lake, surrounded by amazing hills and trees to show off nature's true talent. Not to mention the vast array of wildlife you’ll find grazing and drinking from the lake, Ennerdale Waters is another lake you should take a peek at, especially if you love clear waters!

Wastwater is a dramatic lake located in Wasdale Valley and is known as England's deepest lake. One of the most iconic lakes, Wastwater is situated right next to Red Pike and Scafell Pike, two of England's highest mountains making for a perfect-looking movie set. It may not be the clearest of lakes. but is still one of the prettiest ones out there.

Crummock Water is another lake in Cumbria that is jaw-dropping material. The lake itself is not the biggest out there but is very deep and very flat - so flat that reflections appear quite realistic. Not to mention that surrounding the area are beautiful mountains and small villages to bask in the lake's glory. If you’re in the area, why not hire a rowing boat to get the most out of your adventure?

Esthwaite Water is one of the smallest but very beautiful lakes in the Lake District. This small, island-ridden lake is surrounded by hundreds of trails that have wildlife, and amazing greenery and the lake itself has its own aquatic life too. These waters are perfect for a scenic boat ride, so why not hire one out?

Overlooking Crummock Water, Buttermere Lake is another stunning lake that just makes your jaw drop. This lake is famous for its beautiful setting and although small and not very deep, has very still waters and is surrounded by nature's glory. If you like walks, or just want to take a break by the lake - then Buttermere could be the perfect lake for you.

Grasmere Lake is a popular tourist spot, not only because of the beautiful lake and surroundings but because of the smooth grass locations surrounding the area. Picnicking is a must when you visit Grasmere Lake, and it's also great for boating and paddling on and in the water.

Loweswater Lake is a slightly more hidden lake in the district, tucked away in a wooded valley in the west. Loweswater Lake is often overlooked by travellers but is an amazing lake to sit at in the evening as the waters are perfectly calm and the mountains in the background can often make for a picture-perfect view that we could stare at for hours. One of our last lakes on this list is Rydal Water. Being one of the smallest lakes at just ¾ of a mile long, this popular location is not just about the lake. Featuring several caverns, surrounded by beautiful trees and greenery, it's an all-day rambling and scenery-admiring destination.

Brothers Water is great for visiting with your… brother? Kidding - it's a top spot to visit with anyone (or by yourself), as this small valley is not only the perfect scenery for driving but also features stunning mountains and greenery in the area. The lake itself is small, but clear and bursting with aquatic life such as trout and even the rare species of Schelly, a type of freshwater fish related to salmon. No, Talland beach isn’t tall, and isn’t very long either - but Talland Bay Beach is another serene, and peaceful location for you to relax. Although it’s not very big, it’s one of the least-known beaches in Cornwall, meaning you might even have the beach to yourself on some days. It’s also great if you’ve got kids because the highly-rocky terrain means plenty of marine life to look at! If you’re in the area of Porthallow or Talland, hop down and take a look.

Not everyone likes high waves, and Tolcarne Beach is one of the best places to visit should you like calm seas. With plenty of golden sands surrounded by lush green cliffs, there’s a clear reason why you should visit Tolcarne Beach. Surrounding the area are also plenty of amenities, shops, and facilities that you can visit - so why not take a day out here if you’re passing by the area of Newquay?

No one likes a sandy mouth. It's probably the worst place to get sand. Oh, we’re talking about the beach… well, Sandymouth Beach is a beautiful place, and one we love! This vast expanse with wet sands, partially pebbled beaches and beautiful seas as far as the eye can see, if you’re passing by Bude then we think you should take a look and enjoy yourself here. Just… don’t put sand near your mouth, it’s not nice. 

Beaches are made up of Sand, some rocks, and seas, and Gwynver Beach is the same - but on a massive scale. Gwynver beach has some silky smooth sands, and a vast display of the peaceful sea, but regardless of if you like walking on the sands, pebbles, or traversing big rocks - Gwynver Beach has it all for you. If you’re passing by Sennen, take a walk or relax on this beach, and bask in all the sun, sand, and sea you need. 

Are we in Cornwall or Greece? Lamorna Cove Beach was made by nature to make you feel like you’re in another country. This cove beach is surrounded by rocky mountains but has exotic plants and trees to make you feel like you’re in another country. With expansive, but beautiful seas and a rocky beach surface - we don’t think you’ll be able to sunbathe, but you can have a serene walk. What are you waiting for, check it out!

This beautiful beach has some of the best sands around Cornwall, with perfectly flat beaches, idyllic surroundings and a view of the sea like no other, Mother Ivey’s Bay is one of the best beaches you can visit when around Padstow, in Cornwall. Gorran Haven Beach really is nothing short of a haven. This previously-used port for small fishing boats, Gorran Haven beach makes for a perfect place for families and sunbathing. With low tides and an expansive beachfront with a great view of the sea - we’re surprised it’s not as busy as it should be!
