With the option of their ‘2 To Share’ option, where two can share a large plated breakfast, or if you’re not one for sharing, then you can tuck into your own plate of plum pudding bacon, sausage, black pudding, fried eggs, hash brown, and much more. You can even add a glass of buck fizz for an even special start to the day. 

Take a step back in time in this cafe that has been serving up food since 1900. With wood-panelled walls, Formica-topped tables, this Grade II listed Italian cafe is a landmark amongst the community. A bonus of visiting here, you can enjoy one of their breakfasts all-day, which includes Cumberland sausage, egg, bacon, tomatoes, mushrooms and fried bread. 

Another family-owned business that opened in 1989 and has since become an integral part of the community; the way people talk about Mario from Mario’s Cafe is more of a friend than someone serving you breakfast. With the option of a more customisable breakfast, switching out the sausage for bacon, for example, to create your perfect traditional start to the day. 

If you’re someone who loves spice, Dishoom is well worth a visit. While notably more known for serving up Indian food for years, their breakfast is well worth a visit with the option of The Big Bombay, which includes all of the usual with masala baked beans, mushroom and even their own buttery home-made buns. Or, you can opt for the vegetarian equivalent, The Veggie Bombay. 

This cafe is close by to Putney Bridge and shouldn’t be confused with the Italian restaurant of the same name! What makes this breakfast so great is the hash browns being in the triangular shape, the thickly-cut bacon, and generously sized portions. The River Cafe also sports vintage decor with a British heart.

Tucked away in Brockley, The Orchard opened in 2009 to bring a relaxed lounge and dining area to locals. They serve and source local and independent ingredients, meat and even their ice-cream, where possible. They have a wide range of breakfast options, including their Full English Breakfast and vegetarian Full English Breakfast. It’s popular, so it’s advisable to book early to avoid any disappointment. 

This restaurant originally opened in 1921, incorporating a grand appearance with marble pillars and archways. If you get a table for breakfast, you’ll be stepping into glamour and grandeur. With their traditional breakfast named ‘The English’, it comes with a choice of eggs, bacon, sausage, and all the rest of the trimmings. 

A light and airy choice for brunch, The Modern Pantry has bronze accents and white tables. For your traditional breakfast, you can opt from a choice of eggs of either fried, scrambled or poached eggs with the choices of it coming with smoked-streaky bacon, fried halloumi, or even the choice of grilled chorizo.

Right outside Liverpool Street Station, the Polo Bar cafe has been serving up breakfast since 1953. There are two options for a traditional breakfast, the English Breakfast and The Mighty English Breakfast; they also offer a vegetarian and gluten-free option. With the added benefit of being able to pre-order, you can disembark from your train and pick up your order without having a long wait. 

Having opened in 2013, Blighty Cafe is an organic coffee, flexitarian food, sustainable cafe with bright and modern decorations. With two Blighty Cafe options, one in Tottenham and the other at Finsbury Park, you can choose from Full English, Full Vegetarian English and even a Full Vegan. If you’re travelling from Scotland, they even offer The Full Scottish with all the trimmings you’d expect. 

Opening up in 1946, The Regency Cafe is a small Art Deco café wrapped around all that is Britishness. With photographs of Tottenham Hotspur football players and the walls tiles being the original ones it opened with, it has history soaking out of its pours. It is also used as a popular filming location for British TV shows. Most importantly, they offer a customisable option to their fry-ups, including the options to add extra items. 

With sustainable sourcing of ingredients, The Table Cafe offers a brunch that will knock your socks off. The Borough Full English has home-made baked beans that are made with chorizo and ham hock. While The Green Goddess is another brunch hit, they also offer pancakes and egg-based brunch options too. 

Found in Kensington and opened in 2010, Ffiona’s brunch menu offers a Full English, Full Veggie, and even a dish called the Queen Scramble, which comes with eggs scrambled with pickled jalapeños, cheese, onion, mushroom, and two slices of toast. If you opt for the traditional Full English or Full Veggie, you also get a decent side of chips with it.

Although this might not be the most extensive list to help get your hands on a quintessentially British fry-up, these places are named the best in London. If you’re opting to drive, the worst day for travel is generally the day before, with congestion building all over the country. Hotels With Thanksgiving Dinners Worth Traveling For

Sometimes called Malta’s “Silent City,” Mdina sits on a hilltop with a beautiful view overlooking many neighbouring towns. From old-fashioned fortifications to Baroque and mediaeval architecture throughout the narrow streets, this spot has plenty to recommend it for anyone visiting the area, and Game of Thrones fans will be keen to spot some of the filming locations for a range of places such as the Red Keep and other parts of King’s Landing in Westeros!

Named after the first prime minister of Malta, Howard Gardens is a lovely spot for a walk to take in the sunshine. As well as a football pitch and tennis courts, there’s an orchard of orange trees and plenty of plants and shrubs with benches in shady spots. Other nice green spots in Mdina include nearby il-Foss, the Mdina Gate, and the Md Rahmatullah garden.

If you like a bit of underground exploration, Mdina is a great place to come! As well as the Roman burial sites in St Paul’s Catacombs, you can explore the historical complex of St. Agatha's, which dates back to the 2nd and 3rd century AD and includes the famous frescos of the Sancta Sanctorum chamber.

On the top floor of the 15th Century Palazzo Gatto Murina is Tales of the Silent City, a series of animated displays showing major events from the founding of Mdina all the way up to WWII. You can also take a walking tour of the same name, which starts through the Greek Gate and passes over the moat towards the suburbs of Rabat.

As well as the catacombs, you can visit the Domvs Romana, a museum built on the ruins of a Roman house which were discovered in 1881. Although a lot of the house itself isn’t intact, the mosaics and other artefacts found both on this site and around the rest of Mdina offer a fascinating insight into the everyday life of a Roman nobleman in Malta.

If you’ve got a keen interest in the more action-packed parts of mediaeval life, you’ll definitely want to visit The Knights Of Malta, a multimedia adventure attraction about the order of the Knights Hospitallers of St. John of Jerusalem that’s both educational and great fun for all the family.

This attractive mansion was originally owned by the son of a prosperous shipping merchant and prolific art collector. Now one of the oldest buildings in Mdina, it has been converted into a museum which houses a spectacular collection of paintings, antique furniture, carpets and other works of art, and the nearby Gustav Café is a good spot for lunch after taking it all in.

St Paul's Cathedral in Mdina is regarded as a masterpiece of Baroque architecture since being rebuilt between 1696 and 1705. The magnificent building in the same style next to it, in Archbishop’s Square, is the Cathedral Museum, housing a range of beautiful and fascinating exhibits from St. Jerome in his Study by Albrecht Dürer to the museum vaults and various archaeological remains.

The site of the Magisterial Palace in Mdina has been occupied since prehistoric times, when a bronze-age settlement existed on the same spot. Now more commonly known as Palazzo Vilhena, the palace is a wonderful edifice of French Baroque style on its own, and also houses Malta’s National Museum of Natural History, so is well worth a visit.

Most of Mdina was historically inhabited by families of noble birth (and wealth) and has been excellently preserved, making the entire city a time capsule of sorts for classic Baroque architecture, full of shady side streets with strict vehicle restrictions (which is what gives it the nickname of the Silent City). Stop for a sit and a drink in one of the main squares like Pjazza Mesquita when your feet need a rest.

Departing from outside the Domvs Romana, these trackless train tours are a fun and quirky way to take in some of the countryside while seeing the sights. The local tour lasts about half an hour and takes in some great landmarks while also giving breath-taking views of Mdina via the hilltops, and there’s a great commentary on board to explain what you’re seeing, too.

Mdina has a great selection of different places to eat and drink, but we’ve restrained ourselves to picking out five of our favourites for visitors to try.

Specialising in local produce and traditional Mediterranean dishes, TownHouse No 3 offers a limited but delicious range of dishes, including a taster menu for a smattering of everything. The local pork belly in particular is worth waiting for, and mouth-wateringly tasty.

As well as offering an historical attraction to learn more about old Mdina, be sure you stop by the mediaeval tavern here; it’s like having dinner in a real castle, surrounded by period features and statuary, with a wide range of food on offer including some great platter options.

A charming wine bar and bistro with a magical tavern feel and an impressive wine list, Fontanella has a range of dishes on its menu, including pizza and pasta, but is best known for its platters, which can also be ordered to take away. Its sister establishment, Fontanella Tea Garden, perches up on Mdina’s old walls and offers homemade cakes and coffee.

With both an a la carte and set menu, Lemongrass is an unexpected taste of the orient in the middle of Mdina. From crispy spring rolls to won ton soup, noodle and rice dishes, this is a must-taste spot for most visitors. We’re a huge fan of the deep fried watermelon with honey!

Loaded with freshly prepared food, Veduta has a wide-ranging menu that offers something for pretty much everyone; pizza, pasta, salad, grills, omelettes and a good kid’s menu. The grilled swordfish is a great choice for fish-eaters, but it’s hard to really go wrong here.

There’s no shortage of hotels, B&Bs and guest houses in Mdina or wider Malta, but here are some of our favourite local accommodations to give you some ideas.

A home stay with rentable rooms rather than a traditional hotel, D'Ambrogio is centrally located in Mdina, includes free wifi, and has the option for both a sunbathing bed on the terrace as well as air conditioning in many rooms.

A quiet and cosy guesthouse with plenty of Mediterranean touches, My Travel House lets visitors experience Mdina from the perspective of a local resident. It is also great for exploring, being in easy reach of most attractions such as the catacombs and Dingli Cliffs.

Tucked away on a quaint little street, Casa Azzopardi lies within walking distance of Mdina Gate as well as the main bus station. The upper terrace offers a lovely view over the rest of the city, giving this guest house a great blend of Maltese tradition and modern convenience.

Just outside the historic fortification walls, the Point De Vue guest house dates back to the 17th century and is still family run. Recently renovated with air conditioning in all rooms, it also has its own restaurant for an easy dine-in option when you’re done exploring.

A converted 17th century palazzo, the Xara Palace is the only hotel situated directly inside Mdina’s walls. As well as beautiful views over the nearby countryside and the city, it offers a five star experience with its two restaurants and the Trattoria AD1530 bar onsite.

Despite the limited traffic and carefully-preserved heritage, there’s more to Mdina than just its nickname as the Silent City. The UK's Most Wooftacular Dog-Friendly Hotels

From modern skyscrapers to Victorian shopping arcades, multicultural Cardiff is well known as one of Britain’s best cities to visit. What a lot of people don’t realise is that there are plenty of gorgeous coastal and shore spots nearby too, so let’s take a look at some of the best beaches near Cardiff in Wales for a spot of sunbathing in Cymru along the coast of the Vale of Glamorgan.

With gravel and concrete abounding in the centre of downtown Cardiff this is no place to access the water for swimming, and sunbathing will be a challenge at best, but for an afternoon or evening walk along the water this area is hard to beat for atmosphere.

All right, this is technically a lakeside rather than a “proper” beach, but it is located right next to Cardiff and offers a great place for a nature ramble by the water of Lamby Lake, including lots of winding wooden platform paths over the edge of the lakeside.

In the past the delightfully named Splott Beach had a bad rep as a sewage outlet covered with rubbish, but this spot minutes from central Cardiff has turned around in recent years and is now a lovely - if still rather rocky and pebbly - beach spot for a waterside walk.

The Cardiff Harbour area has a wide range of facilities on offer, from bike paths and picnic areas to a lovely stretch of rocky beach to stroll along. Take the Cardiff Bay Walk path up to the Aqua Park for some wet-and-bouncy action, or just take in the bay views.

This rocky and stony beach gives plenty of waterfront access if you fancy a dip, but facilities are nonexistent as it is literally just a stretch of Welsh countryside. Still, it’s only about a twenty minute drive from Cardiff and still good for a nice, cooling paddle.

Around half an hour by car from central Cardiff, Barry Island Beach is a great spot; golden sands (not rocks or pebbles) and a decent, if minimal, range of facilities such as toilets and places to eat. Get there early on the sunniest summer days though, as it can get busy.

Again roughly half an hour from Cardiff, the scenic area of Cold Knap Beach is a surprisingly popular swimming spot. It has a rocky shore with pebbles rather than sand on the beach but is still a lovely area. Watch out on your way in; the incline to the water can be a bit steep for some.

With gorgeous views across the water and a striking hilly background, this spot about forty minutes drive from Cardiff is one for scenery admiring rather than swimming. The beach itself is heavily rocky and pebble-dashed but there’s some good rock pools to be found.

Three quarters of an hour’s drive from Cardiff, Monknash beach is part of the Blaen y Cwm Nature Reserve so a haven for wildlife. Don’t expect any facilities or amenities here, but this lovely isolated beach is great for a quiet walk or giving your dog a seaside adventure.

Not too much further west from Monknash, Traeth Mawr is a peaceful and green spot with a mixture of rocks and sand as well as gorgeous unspoilt views across the ocean. There’s not much else around apart from a free car park, but what else could you really need?

About fifty minutes by car from Cardiff, Cwm y Buarth (Temple Bay) is another untouched scenic stretch of coastline with a sandy beach and impressive cliffs. There’s even a waterfall if you know where to look, but be aware that this remote spot is popular with naturists!

Anywhere from forty minutes to an hour’s drive from Cardiff depending on traffic, Dunraven Bay is great for aspiring rock climbers (or rock pool hunters), although the rougher terrain down on the beach may not be ideal for everyone to navigate.

A relatively quick thirty-five to forty minute drive from Cardiff down via M4, Ogmore By Sea is a charming little seaside town with good facilities; car parking, toilets and ice cream are all available, but thanks to the sandy beach it can get crowded quickly in the sunshine.

Again take a quick forty minute trip down the M4 from Cardiff and you’ll find the pleasant oceanside town of Porthcawl, which has its own seafront with plenty of amenities, but we prefer the nearby Newton Beach, ten minutes from the village, which has fewer crowds.

All right, so this is technically even less of a “real beach” than Parc Tredelerch, but where else can you get a beach atmosphere and play volleyball on sand in the middle of an urban area? We dare you not to get far too into it when you give it a go.

All The Best Beaches Near Cardiff, Wales

This port city sits on the south coast of France, west of Cannes and east of Marseille. There’s plenty to take in here, from the beautifully rugged Provencal landscape surrounding the area, to the extensive harbour that’s a super spot for naval enthusiasts. Make the most of your next visit to Toulon, France, with hoo’s top tips for what to do and where to stay in this underrated gem in Mediterranean France.

There’s not much point in visiting Toulon unless you’re going to visit the local harbour; this scenic spot is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful in Europe, from the various forts and towers to the general panorama, breathtaking sunsets and, of course, plenty of boats of all shapes and sizes passing through.

The main church in the local diocese, Toulon Cathedral is a national monument that was built from the 11th to 18th centuries before it was finished! Some of the most striking features to take in include the 118ft high clock tower topped by an iron campanile, the angels on the tympanum of the porch, and the gorgeous Corinthian columns. Even some of the furnishings are works of art, such as the 18th century Baroque retable in the Corpus Christi chapel, originally made of wood by famed sculptor Pierre Puget and painstakingly reconstructed in marble and stucco by Puget's nephew and student, Christophe Veyrier, when the original was lost in a fire in 1661.

Offering fantastic views over both the city and harbour, La Tour Royale was originally built by the French Navy but has been an historic monument since 1947. This spot has something for everyone; history buffs will want a look at the “Torrioni” style cannon towers, kids will love the play areas and green spaces, couples won’t want to miss the promenade (especially at sunset) and ocean tech fans must see the famous FNRS 3 bathyscaphe installation which commemorates the historic 1954 diving record of 4,050 metre (over 13,000 feet).

Originally belonging to the family of Admiral Chomel de Jarnieu, the Parc du Pré Sandin was bought by the city in 1974 and extensively landscaped. The original mansion on the land was demolished in 1980 after falling victim to vandalism but there are some absolutely enormous century-old trees still around, some 3-4m (9-13ft) in diameter! As well as all the plants and lawns, including a big bamboo patch, there’s a scenic walk along the canal to the fountain, along with a children’s playground and bowling alley in the area. Remember not to feed your baguettes to the ducks!

For only a handful of euros you can visit the Musée de la Marine in Toulon for a thorough look at the history of the city, including loads of exquisitely detailed model ships and old paintings about French naval history from the 17th century to the present day. It is accessed through the impressive gate of the old arsenal by the clocktower, so it is hard to miss!

Originally built in 1858, La place de la Liberté was once called the “centre of modern Toulon.” The Fountain of the Federation on the square was inaugurated in 1890 and shows three figures carved in Calissane stone which represent France, Force and Justice - pretty appropriate for a fountain originally commissioned by the old Ministry of War. These days the square is a great place to catch some sun or have a leisurely sit and a drink, be it a morning cuppa, afternoon coffee or evening glass of wine.

Is it really a visit to France if you don’t do something opera-related? The Opéra de Toulon first opened its doors in 1862 and the Grand Théâtre housing it is built in a neo-classical style with striking grey and pink columns as well as Byzantine-style geometric friezes and an Oriental-inspired flooring. The opera offers a wide range of entertainment each season, from lyrical and symphonic shows to more conventional theatre, and even cinema-concerts. Check and book before you go as there’s bound to be something you’ll enjoy.

Rugby is a staple spectator sport in Toulon so you can’t possibly consider your visit to the city complete without taking in a Rugby Union game at the Stade Mayol. Home of RC Toulonnais, it first opened back in 1920 and was named for its patron, concert hall singer Félix Mayol, who bought the land for the club. Make sure you learn the words to Pilou pilou, the famous chant of the home team, so you can join in when the cheerleaders start up!

Open all year round since 2011, the Muséum Départemental du Var is a surprisingly enjoyable spot and has some great exhibitions for nature lovers who are interested in the natural history of the Provence region, from its flora and fauna to its often turbulent geology. Make sure you also stop into the Garden of the Las, a beautiful green area housing exotic plants from as far abroad as China and Australia, all with helpful information panels that explain what you’re looking at.

This 584m (over 1900ft) tall mountain overlooks the main city of Toulon, and has a WWII memorial at the peak, which you can tackle on foot or by cable car. As if the scenic views weren’t tempting enough, the mountain is also home to the Parc  Animalier  du  Mont  Faron, a wonderful animal park away from the bustle of the city with a rich history of rescuing and rehabilitating circus animals, especially large felines such as lions and tigers.

There are plenty of gorgeous shoreline spots in Toulon city and the surrounding coastal countryside, all with sandy beaches and plenty of options for shade. The Mediterranean-style sun in the south of France means the sands heat up fast, so watch your feet, and there are a couple of nude-friendly areas too if that’s your jam! We particularly like the Plage de la Mitre up by the Royal Tower, although the artificial Plages du Mourillon arguably are better situated for amenities such as volleyball, eateries and amusement centres for the kids.

There’s absolutely tons you can get into at the Toulon Yacht Club, from boat rentals and private lessons to kite surfing, kayaking and paddle boarding, and even paddle board yoga on the water! They also offer sessions on an e-foil as well as equipment rentals, and handily everything can be booked in advance and paid for online so it’s well worth taking a look if you really want to make the most of the harbour setting during your stay.

It’s hard to pass by the Hôtel des Arts in Toulon without wanting to go inside; this beautiful and colourful building is eye-catching to say the least! Inside art-lovers will find a variety of exhibitions celebrating contemporary art, especially design and interior architecture. There are also regular workshops for all ages and skill levels, and since admission to most of these is generally free, it’s hard to argue with the price.

A charming blend of historic and modern, Le jardin Alexandre 1er covers over 5 acres and has 350 trees, 5,000 Mediterranean species and 350 aquatic plants to see. There’s a refitted promenade with water steps and ornamental water bodies, children’s play areas, a dog park, a big fish pond, and a recently restored old band stand. Learn more about the area and plants with historical codes and QR-code enabled panels for interactivity; you can take prams, buggies and wheelchairs around quite easily and the area has been renovated with access to lower mobility guests in mind.

Smack in the heart of Toulon city centre is the Centre Mayol, with over a hundred shops and restaurants to choose from. As well as global brands like Sephora, Claire’s Accessories and JD Sports, you can also take a look around more continental names such as Cherry Blue, Grain de malice and Nocibé. Grab a snack at the Waffle Factory and a smoothie at Mangos, or stop by Guinguette de Mayol or Kudeta for more of a sit-down meal once you’re done shopping.

Combine Mediterranean and Provencal tastes with dinner at L'Aromate Provençal. The menu varies with the seasons as everything is locally sourced, but the rich flavours and sauces echo back to the history of Provence in a charming but not overly rustic setting.

A unique concept restaurant that leans into “bistronomy” - small restaurant cooking meets haute cuisine - Le Bistrok takes pride in its eclectic decor and unusual menu, from green curry and truffle pasta to udon ramen and Apulian truffle cream.

This more conventional French-Mediterranean restaurant has a staple menu of traditional dishes delivered par excellence. Le Resto des Artistes is a very appealing spot for foodies who want to really indulge their taste buds in a cosy atmosphere.

L’Équerre, the bar-restaurant onsite, has a fully restored nineteenth century glass ceiling attributed to the Eiffel workshops, and there’s a rooftop pool and solarium with sea views that is an ideal spot to relax in.

Handily situated near the Toulon train station, Grand Hôtel de la Gare is loaded with artistic touches and Haussmannian architecture, and has a gorgeous view of Mont Faron from most windows, including the breakfast room. What To Do & See When Visiting Toulon in France

So let's start with the surfing. For proof that Morocco offers all the waves you can handle, head down the coast to the town of Tamraght. Originally a small fisherman’s village, over the years it's grown into an international destination for surfers that's managed to maintain the charm of its origins despite now being packed with surf schools: the sandy shores offer a good base for beginners to take their first steps while further out there are the kind of waves that bring in crowds of seasoned surfers.

Situated near stunning Banana beach, a local favourite point break that's dotted with banana trees, Tamraght House Banana offers all the comforts of a Moroccan home with a mix of traditional and contemporary architecture designed to make the most of the cooling sea breeze and a terrace that's perfect for chilling in front of one of the stunning local sunsets.

Moving further inland and located near the last major oasis before the desert, M'Hamid El Ghizlane ('the place of the gazelles') is a small town near the border with Algeria. Perched on the edge of the Sahara, it's about 20 miles from the stunning dunes of Erg Chigaga whose slightly out-of-the-way location means they're less busy than the better-known Erg Chebbi.

Local guides operate overnight trips by camel or off-road vehicle to the dunes, some of which tower more than 150 feet over the surrounding desert. Chez Madani in M'Hamid offers accommodation in traditional adobe buildings in an eco-friendly farm, as well as guided tours and vegan meals and barbecue specialties in its open-air dining area.

Originally a transit point on the trade routes towards Timbuktu and later a place of pilgrimage for Berber tribespeople, the small village of Merzouga with its streets of mud-brick buildings is a popular stop for tourists visiting the Erg Chebbi dunes: a couple of hundred miles north east of M'Hamid, it possesses the largest natural underground body of water in Morocco. Camel trips to the dunes are available here too, and the stylish Riad les Jardins de Merzouga offers accommodation with private bathrooms and an on-site restaurant, bike hire, excursions and guided tours.

As you might imagine from its nickname - 'the door of the desert' - the town of Ouarzazate in the middle of the plateau south of the High Atlas Mountains is an excellent starting point for trips into the picturesque Draa Valley and surroundings. The nearby fortified village of Aït Benhaddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is well worth a visit, and since 1983 Ouarzazate has also been home to the immense Atlas Studios, where films and TV shows including The Jewel of the Nile, 2019's Aladdin, Gladiator and Game of Thrones have all been shot, and the studio offers tours of its many sets. Further north and to the west of the foothills of the Atlas Mountains is Marrakesh, the country's fourth largest city which is packed with things to see, from cultural heritage sites like the gorgeous 150-room Bahia Palace or the ruins of El Badi Palace, to the city's souks, like traditional spice market Souk Place des Épices or the Souk Semmarine, the city's largest, as well as museums like the Maison de la Photographie photo gallery, the Jardin Majorell botanical garden or the Musée Yves Saint Laurent. And that's without even mentioning the local hammams or world heritage site Jemaa el-Fna, the huge open square at the centre of the medina that UNESCO has designated a 'Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity' and which fills with dancers, magicians and food-stalls as evening draws in.
